Josh Groban is without a doubt one of the great talents of our time, or any time. His first album has become a part of my life. His career is so new and so full of promise. However, I have to be absolutely truthful in saying that I am very disappointed in "Closer". The only song I really like is "You Raise Me Up". I think there has been a miscalculation on the part of Groban's advisers, writers, and producer. "Closer" is trying to move everyone closer to the classical. If you love classical, that's fine. I like some of it, in small doeses, and the way he handled it in his first album was marvelous. But this album is extreme in it's almost experimental music that has neither good continuity nor the passion that I had so hoped for. Josh Groban is, again, unique and a fabulous talent, but he may have taken a wrong turn here in his career. This album definitely misses the mark. If Josh Groban and his team do not see any difference in classical and contemporary, they'd better think again. Most people are like me -- they can take classical up to a point, a limit. But "Closer" crosses and goes beyond that limit. Groban has the talent and versatility to capture elements of classical and incororate it into his own "unclassifiable" sound. But in "Closer" he did not do it. I can only hope that his next album will take these factors into consideration and will be worthy of his talent.
